Random Thoughts for Today

Random Thoughts for Today

1. Time flies when you’re busy . . . and when you’re not. Spring break is over and we are back in school. I’m not sure where the week went. Unlike past years, Spring Break was uneventful; unless, you consider taking animals to the vet for their shots, doing your taxes, shelving books and getting rid of clothing that doesn’t fit anymore eventful. Still that doesn’t seem like a week’s worth of time spent. As a friend pointed out (*See…

Prepare for the Expected

Prepare for the Expected

Last week in North Texas we found ourselves dealing with weather related school closings, battling icy roadways, and trying to stay warm despite single digit temperatures. Today, I have no heat on, the windows are all wide open, the house plants are on the back patio basking in the sunshine and eighty one degree temperatures. You often here people around here say, “only in Texas,” when referring to these drastic weather changes. I will not argue that here it is…

Winter Break

Winter Break

We have one more day of winter break, a winter break that we did not know we were having until Monday night. Usually as the spring semester begins, students and faculty are all counting the days until spring break, which occurs midway through the semester. By that point, everyone is ready for a break – either to get out of town for a real vacation or to just sleep late and enjoy quiet time at home. We have barely started…

A (Sappy) Romp Through the Past Year

A (Sappy) Romp Through the Past Year

So here we are beginning a new year. A few days ago, on my birthday, I said that I was not in the mood for a sappy romp through the past. Today I have changed my mind. I am a woman; changing my mind is a woman’s prerogative, isn’t it? Prerogative or not, I am about to take a look back at the highlights of 2010 in my world. The early part of the year was calm for us though…

I Wonder

I Wonder

I wonder if we are born knowing to wonder or wanting to wonder,If wonder is a gift or a curse. I wonder why I am different or if I am different,Why I care or why you do. I wonder if we all see the same colors,Is my blue also your blue, my red your red? I wonder if we see the same good and the same evil,Know the same despair and the same hope. I wonder why some of us…

Saturday 11/20/2010

There are lots of things that I could have, and maybe even should have done today. Make a shopping list of all the necessary items for a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. Go grocery shopping so that I can purchese all the necessary items and get a head start on the preparations for a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. Dig out and then iron the table linens so that I have a worthy place to serve a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. Find a loving new…

Late Night Dilemma

Late Night Dilemma

I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t like to eat out at restaurants unless it is for a specific occasion or because my taste buds yearn for something whose preparatory process exceeds my culinary skills. I really hate the notion of “having” to eat out because there is not enough time to prepare a meal at home. Most food in restaurants these days seems to be primarily variations on a fried theme; little variety exists from one place to…

Time Change

Time Change

I am getting to that age where I find myself saying, “Times sure have changed!” I am learning to live happily with some of these changes. Like .. . Grocery sacks that have moved from paper to plastic to reusable Paying all my bills without licking a single stamp or envelope The ability to carry every music recording I own with me at all times thanks to my iPod Pets can be micro chipped so that should they get lost,…

The Last One Standing

The Last One Standing

Yesterday I walked into the office at school and our beloved administrative assistant was filling a bowl with this year’s first round of Halloween candy. Today as I passed by this same bowl, this is what I saw. What is it about the last piece of any kind of food? I see similar images when I walk by the doughnut table at church on Sunday mornings. By the time the late service begins, one lonely doughnut sits on a platter…
