Birthday Traditions

Birthday Traditions

Yesterday was my 54th birthday.  In the last week we have celebrated both of my daughters’ birthdays and Christmas.  It goes without saying that this is a busy time in our family!  Interestingly, all of the men in our family–husband, ex-husband, daughter’s boyfriend–all have summer birthdays, an they are months apart rather than days. Despite being packed in around Christmas, I have always made a point to keep my girls’ birthdays separate from Christmas and separate from each other.  Everyone…

Christmas 2015

Christmas 2015

Christmas has come and gone.  In Texas, at least for us, it was the calm before the storm.  The Dallas area had devastating tornadoes last night, one of which contained 200 mph winds, that left eleven people dead and massive property damage that has not yet been fully assessed.  Though the tornado sirens sounded for us and we had a plan for taking shelter, we never moved from our positions  in front of the TV where we were watching the…

The Road Toward Christmas

The Road Toward Christmas

It was Thanksgiving when I last wrote and now we are only seven days away from Christmas.  Over these last three weeks there were days that seemed to go on forever – mainly those where I was so tired that all I could think of was a nap; but for the most part, time has whizzed by.  Until the last week, I wasn’t sure that I was going to get my act together for Christmas.  There were moments over these…

A Whirlwind Week

A Whirlwind Week

The past week seems to have flown by!  Last weekend we were in Baltimore because I had a NOAH board meeting.  Though it was a quick trip and I had little free time, I enjoyed the getaway and change of scenery.  Weber and I did have a bit of time to wander around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Friday afternoon before my meeting began at 6. It was interesting to see another lightship.  My dad was instrumental in restoring a similar…

Thankful To Be Grateful

Thankful To Be Grateful

Sunday began November and the season of Thanksgiving.  I love this time of year – the falling leaves, the cooler temperatures,  big pots of warm soup, and the flannel sheets back on my bed.   I also like the idea of being intentional about giving thanks, but, it’s confession time, I don’t really like the Thanksgiving holiday.  It always seems like way too much work resulting in way too much food for way too little enjoyment.  By the time we…

All Saints Day

All Saints Day

A year ago today was my dad’s memorial service.  The readings, the hymns, and the day for that celebration were all details that I carefully orchestrated.  What better day for a memorial service than All Saints Day?  As today, November 1, 2015, comes to an end, I have now passed the year mark of life without my dad.  Every anniversary date that  comes along from now on will no longer be “the first.”  I was blessed to have had the…

Welcome, Piper!

Welcome, Piper!

Today was not a normal Sunday.  Weber is still suffering with Shingles and its accompanying tiredness so we did not go to church at 9 this morning.  We also did not have our regular Sunday brunch get together because so many had conflicting schedules today.  That left Weber and me to our own devices this afternoon.   We had a late and leisurely, let’s just say, meal about 1:30.  Though we had breakfast food, it was too late to even…

Alone With Me

Alone With Me

Today was just the day I needed!  It was gray and rainy.  Not cold, but that’s okay.  And, I got to stay at home all day!  For most of the day I could hear the falling rain, its rhythm somewhat irregular but comforting nonetheless.  I was up early, made breakfast for Weber, wrote my morning pages, shared a few texts with friends, and then went back to bed for an hour.  The weather encouraged it.  My calendar allowed it.  And,…

Let’s Talk About Today

Let’s Talk About Today

My day began early and with the following two posts on Facebook:1. “The time needs to change.  Getting to school in the dark is just not right.”2. Note to self: Beginning a 7:30 ear training class with harmonic dictation in the minor mode is not a good way to start the day.And so went my day.  It had an early and rough start, but by my 9:00 class, things were moving along fairly well.  Five classes later, I was done teaching…

What’s Been Going On

What’s Been Going On

What the saying?  “Life is what happens while we are busy making plans.”  I made the big pronouncement that my plan was to post here regularly.  I guess the truth is that I don’t yet have enough of a trend to define “regularly” but in my head that meant almost every day if not every day.  And here it is five days since my last post.  So what’s been going on?  Lots, actually. The biggest obstacle to posting has been…
