161/365-2 Staycation

161/365-2 Staycation

“Birthday Boy” Today was Weber’s birthday.  I’d like to say that it was an exciting day of celebration, but that would be a lie.  We ran some errands this morning – Walgreens for prescriptions,  Sams for cases of green beans for the dog and Target for something that I can’t even remember.  Then it was a quiet afternoon at home.  Weber spent some time reading his “birthday book.”  I looked back at his birthday photo from last year in which…

“My Two Lensbabies”  Today is my 52nd birthday.  I’m not sure why disclosing one’s age has always been on the socially unacceptable list.  It is what it is.  There are days when I look and feel far beyond my years; then there are those days when I feel much younger.  The truth is, no matter how young or old you look or feel,  where you are is where you are and it is much better than the alternative. This is…

357/365 Jolly Ol’ St. Nick

357/365 Jolly Ol’ St. Nick

“Welcome to Adulthood” My baby turned 21 today.  I have successfully raised all of the offspring to adulthood. Is it time for retirement now? It is hilarious to me that the day’s prompt is St. Nick.  Erin despises Santa Claus, always has.  We have zero pictures of her on Santa’s lap.  And, we have zero ornaments or decorations depicting Santa.  Erin has always said that she believes Santa to be kind of creepy. Erin made her way into adulthood today…

“Happy 24th, Brooke!” Let the celebrations begin!  Today is the first in our week of birthday celebrations – Brooke, Erin and me and sandwiched there in the middle is Jesus. Being the creature of habit that she is, we celebrate Brooke’s birthday the same way each year – dinner out and a movie.  Tonight’s dinner was supposed to be Ethiopian fare, but the restaurant of choice was closed for a private party.  How rude!  Plan B was Indian food.  It…

309/365 Grateful for Birthdays

309/365 Grateful for Birthdays

“The Right Time” Despite all the jokes and teasing that usually come our way on birthdays, especially once you cross the 50 mark, they are still deserving of a joyous celebration.  To have the opportunity to greet another year is such a blessing. One of the ways that we honor and celebrate the lives of our parents who have died is to light a remembrance candle on their birthdays.  It is a small but meaningful gesture.

221/365 Dress to Impress

“Overdressed?” I’m so glad that today’s prompt of “dress to impress” was not this month’s self portrait! Dressing to impress is definitely not my thing. My daughter, however, is always willing to dress or perhaps overdress. Today doing her daily bread baking chore, she was moI‘mre “dressed” than I get most days – for anything. I have often said to my girls, “I don’t wear outfits; I wear clothes.” Dressing is purely functional. Bottom line: I want to be comfortable.

Gingerbread House Build

Though the Christmas decorations were all put away last weekend (except for the snowman that I noticed in the hall bathroom today), our Christmas vacation really didn’t end until today.  Brooke left to go back to Chicago and Erin started back to school.  It was really nice to have both girls here with us last night.  Erin was a real trooper and spent the night with us so that she could get up at 5:15 to take Weber to the…

Like Daughter, Like Mother

Like Daughter, Like Mother

Today is my 51st birthday.  I didn’t have any big plans, but the ones I did have did not involve being sick.  Last night, I began to feel “not right.”  By ten o’clock or so I was running a fever.  By 12:37 am this morning, the actual time of my birth, I was running a measurable temperature of 102.  I was curled up on the couch wrapped in my purple peace sign covered Snuggie that Weber gave me for Christmas…

Twenty years ago on this day, I had thirty-some staples in my abdomen, a horrific spinal headache and a brand new baby girl.  Today we celebrated Erin’s twentieth birthday – and the fact that I have successfully raised all of my offspring through the teenage years. (This post is tagged with teenagers.  I guess it will be the last time I use it for a good long while.)Erin is one for establishing and maintaining traditions.  Unfortunately, at least one of her traditions…

No. 1 is 23

Twenty three years ago on this day I had thirty-some staples in my abdomen, a horrific spinal headache, and a brand new baby girl.  Today we celebrated Brooke’s 23rd birthday. As is the case with most everything involving Brooke, how she chose to spend her birthday was somewhat atypical. The day began by her making a batch of molasses cookies – not for herself, but for the rest of us.  I learned that the last thing that a pastry chef…
